Pourquoi l’Afrique du Sud devrait être vos premières vacances en 2021

Ja pluie est tombée forte et régulière dans ce qui était par ailleurs un hiver doux du Cap, emportant la peur, l’odeur de désinfectant. Il a rempli les barrages, la terre humide engendrant la meilleure saison de fleurs sauvages de mémoire d’homme. Nous avons enduré l’un des confinements les plus difficiles au monde, mais nous sommes ressortis en clignotant sous le soleil de septembre, au niveau 1.

Il faut du courage pour faire le long trajet vers le sud. Il est également important de consultez les derniers conseils de voyage et sachez que, bien que les vols internationaux vers l’Afrique du Sud aient repris, il existe actuellement des restrictions sur les voyages en provenance de pays que les autorités sud-africaines considèrent comme à haut risque. Cela inclut le Royaume-Uni, les voyages touristiques ou de loisirs en provenance du Royaume-Uni étant interdits, sauf si vous avez l’intention de rester en Afrique du Sud pendant trois mois ou plus.

Cependant, une fois ces restrictions passées (et les ministres ont déclaré cette semaine qu’ils espéraient un assouplissement des règles d’ici décembre), les récompenses seront grandes : c’est le pays de la grande nature, avec un espace qui vous encourage à expirer – pas de cliché, quand la respiration est devenue si difficile. Le Cap a toujours été un attrait, mais la proximité de sa nature sauvage – l’épine montagneuse du parc national de Table Mountain qui s’étend le long de sa péninsule, les forêts de varech dorées qui se balancent sous l’Atlantique – n’a jamais autant compté.

The city offers a springboard into outdoor experiences, from walking the Kogelberg, in all its complex biodiversity, to swimming with flamingos in Langebaan lagoon; from diving into spring-fed pools fringed with palmiet to sleeping under black heavens dusted with a million stars in the Cederberg.

With the new challenges of travel, it makes sense to stay longer. Hire a car and meander from the Cape to the Camdeboo, staying in remote cottages and welcoming guesthouses (with protocols in place, of course). Or make yourself at home in the terroir of your choice, living like a local, wine-tasting on foot.

If you’ve dreamt of going on safari, 2021 is the year to book, with rates frozen, long stays incentivised and exclusive-use options for families and small groups. With more time, there is no reason to fly domestically – roads are mostly excellent. If you prefer, hire a high-clearance camper and plot a route that never touches tar. With the exchange rate at 21 rand to the pound, all this will be possible once restrictions lift. If we have learnt one thing this year, it is to be present. Make it somewhere extraordinary.
